The essential qualification for those who handle claims, issue domestic insurance contracts, deal with customer enquiries, appoint intermediaries to investigate standard claims and initiate claims recovery, the Certificate IV in General Insurance is a great start to a career in insurance.

Upon completion of the Certificate IV in General Insurance, graduates will become an Associate Certified Insurance Professional (CIP) of the Institute and will have met all requirements for ASIC Tier 1 compliance for general insurance.

Course Structure

The Certificate IV is comprised of six modules. The first five modules should involve 50 – 70 hours of study time and the sixth online module should involve 4 -8 hours of study time.

*Students are only required to select one Insurance Law and Regulation module only. NZ students are to complete GI406 NZ Insurance Law and Regulation. All other students are to complete GI402 Insurance Law and Regulation.

Students can choose to enrol in both modules should they wish to do so.

Explains the impact of the economic environment on financial services products, explores creating a relationship with the client in order to establish general insurance needs and thereby identify appropriate products.

Learning Outcomes

Covers the range of products and policies available, and describes their structure, features and benefits. It also explains how emerging technologies have affected the insurance industry.

Learning Outcomes

GI406-15 New Zealand Insurance Law and Regulation

This module is for New Zealand students only and covers health and safety in the workplace as well as the Acts, regulations and the codes of practice that govern a general insurer’s day-to-day job as well as formal requirements for internal and external dispute resolution.

Describes the types of insurance policies available and covers the start-to-end process of handling a claim including registering claims, obtaining the relevant information from the client along with proper documentation, deciding whether further investigation is required and finalising claims.

GIBF41-15 Business Fundamentals for General Insurance

This online unit describes the role of good customer service in building and maintaining the profitability of your organisation. The unit also describes how to identify, model and meet expected industry professional approaches to procedures, guidelines, policies, standards and ethical requirements.

In addition, the unit describes how to use, communicate and present information to develop/maintain effective working relationships and networks.

Finally, this unit addresses how to participate in occupational health and safety processes to protect work colleagues.

This Module has a workplace assessment in the form of a Workplace Skills Observation (WPO). The WPO is due within 6 weeks of you completing the online assessment.
