Underwriting

Every request for property-casualty insurance that crosses an underwriter’s desk is unique. If that were not the case, the job of underwriting would not exist, and each application could be processed mechanically, in assembly-line fashion. Because property-casualty insurance requests are unique, underwriters are vitally important to insurance companies.

Marine Insurance Underwriting and Claims Management

As you are aware since the beginning of January, 2017, it has been a requirement that all importers take insurance exclusively with local underwriters. Since then marine insurance premiums have been on the rise and continue to grow. There is still a huge opportunity for insurance players to increase and improve their business through marine offerings.

However marine insurance still remains a complex area that requires a thorough understanding and knowledge to be able to effectively execute it. This is more so on the technical areas of marine underwriting and claims. In view of this, the Insurance Institute of East Africa (IIEA) has organized a comprehensive 3 days’ workshop on Marine Insurance Underwriting and Claims Management. This training is designed to equip the participants with knowledge and skills to assess and underwrite risk relating to marine insurance and to survey risk exposure. It is also designed to enable participants to understand the legal terms and concepts, and explain the process, principles and adjustment of marine insurance claims.

Understand Professional Liability Insurance

Commercial general liability (CGL) and business owners policies cover many of the liability loss exposures arising from the conduct of a business. However, certain occupations, such as physicians and attorneys, have an additional liability loss exposure: the professional liability exposure, which is not covered under these policies. These individuals need separate professional liability insurance to cover their professional liability risk.

There are also other business-related liability risks that fall under the professional liability category and are not covered under general liability policies. These include directors’ and officers’ liability, fiduciary liability, and employment practices liability. Businesses must purchase separate coverage to cover these exposures. In this course, participants will learn about the most common types of professional liability policies written for specific professions and businesses.

Bancassurance Fundamentals

Bancassurance has been one of the most important developments in the financial services sector in the past forty years. Bancassurance, in its simplest form, is the distribution of insurance products through a bank's distribution channels. It is an arrangement between a bank and an insurance company that allows the insurance company to sell its products to the bank's client base, as a common distribution channel. The motives behind bancassurance vary. This partnership can be profitable for both companies. For banks, it means product diversification. Banks earn additional revenue by selling insurance products and insurance companies expand their customer bases without increasing their sales force or paying commission to agents and brokers. This can help deliver volume growth in their business with a lower cost per sale.
